FAQs
How and when should I enroll for the course?
After you have decided on the number of hours you wish to study and the time frame in which you would prefer to do so, please email the center for an application form. You should enroll in courses at least one month in advance to secure teachers and accommodation.
How do I get a visa?
At least one month prior to studying, you should email the center for an application form. You will need to submit this form with a scanned image of your passpot photo and information page of passport, along with $300 non-refundable sent via Western Union to secure your course and accommodation. We recommend people to get their visas from the Yemeni embassies before their arrival. If they need the acceptance letters from CALES, students should inform us. We recommend students apply for “student visas ”, so we will be able to extend them to a longer residency visa if desired. Unfortunately, we can’t extend tourist visas. Sometimes, we issue visas for students who don't have Yemeni embassies in their countries.
How do I get to CALES from the airport?
Transportation to/from the airport upon arrival/departure will be provided by the school at US$15. Please inform the center of your flight details so the school can arrange this for you in advance.
Where will I be living while studying at CALES?
Accommodation is available at the center, as well as at some hotels close to the center.
If you prefer to live at the center and there is space available, your $300 deposit will guarantee you pre-arranged accommodation. If you would like to live elsewhere, the school will help you arrange this upon your arrival. Sometimes, however, finding suitable cheap accommodation can prove difficult.
What preparations do I need to make if I wish to travel outside Sana'a?
Traveling outside Sana'a usually requires a permit. To obtain this you will need to inform the director of your plans and he will produce a letter, which you then need to take to the tourist police along with your passport. You may also need some copies of your passport; the pages with your picture and your visa.
What do students study after they complete the Advanced level?
After completing the advanced level, you will begin a less structured program of consolidation. This will involve reading newspapers, novels and other more advanced texts as well as extracts from the news on both television and radio. As with the previous course, you will be able to dictate to a large extent what you would like to study during class.
Is Sana'a safe?
According to the news and the advice on some government websites, Yemen may not seem like a safe place to visit. In fact the Yemeni people are very friendly and well disposed towards people from the west. Everywhere you go people will call "welcome to Yemen" and you will find many people keen to practice speaking English with you.
There is virtually no street crime in Sana'a, and it is safe to walk the streets at any time of the day or night. In fact, many students feel much safer here than they do in their home town!
